Guitar Lessons in Tulsa | Students should not be Happy Hopers

I did a podcast last week called The Happy Hoper and this podcast. The goal was to distinguish between a happy hopper and diligent doer. This is a process that we use here at Curtis Music Academy with all of our students now all the time. But we really should implement it more often because it’s a really effective illustration and visualization to see how students should be performing and their guitar lessons in Tulsa

And I don’t want to use performance in a negative way, but I want his performance in the sense that it’s a really motivating factor for them. And we want to make sure that all of our students are succeeding and that we’re helping them in every way possible. So we have this little sticky notes that say the diligent doer in addition to the sticky notes. We also have what we call this giant poster called the diligent doer poster. It’s a Curtis Music Academy method and it distinguishes between the diligent doer and the happy hoper.

So this is hanging on the wall in our lobby. At least it used to be. We need to find a way to hang it back up in this new studio space. But the diligent doer is the opposite of a happy hopper, and we try to encourage all of our students to be a diligent doer. So adult door. For those of you who might not know because I had done this podcast a ton of times, but maybe you haven’t read them and I hope you know, reading them. But in case you are, I won’t talk about what a diligent doer actually is in guitar lessons in Tulsa.

So a diligent doer at Curtis music academy is someone who is always on top of learning the instrument. And this does not come naturally. It’s not typically a natural thing to just want to practice. I want to be on top of the instrument and want to always be learning. But that’s what a diligent doer does. So at Curtis Music Academy, we include all of our students to have goals because we recognized the importance of goals like you talked about in the Happy Hoper podcast. If you do not have goals in your life, not just in music, but in life, then you will have no idea where you’re going.

And especially we’ll have no idea how on earth you’re going to get there. So it’s really important to write down your goals, not only just to visualize them and think about them. Those are important things, too. But what’s most important, perhaps, is that you write down your goals so that they are tangible when something is tangible. We are so much more likely to follow through with it and to do it. So it is pretty frequent, I would say infrequent that people actually write down their goals. But if you were to write them down. I believe studies have shown that writing down your goals makes you up to 40 to 60 percent more likely to complete them than just remembering them in your head. That’s what we always say. That’s a common excuse. Oh, I know what they are. I know what I’m doing. I’ve got it for guitar lessons in Tulsa.

Got it in my head or whatever they want to say. But that is just not how it works in the real world. And everyone knows that. You can’t just have a goal in your head, because if you do, you will not remember it. I guarantee you, you won’t remember it and you won’t follow through with it because it’ll be something that you’re not used to and you don’t want it then. And if you don’t have a written down, there’s almost no motivation for you to continue with it because you can’t see it. And out of sight, out of mind, like a lot of things. If you’re not using it, if it’s out of sight, you’re not going to get any better and you’re not going to see that.

So we encourage all of our students to know their goals. And if they don’t know their goals, well, we asked them to go back in time. Think back in their head about the first time they took a music lesson with us or in general and to think to themselves, well, when did I start taking guitar lessons in Tulsa to begin with? What was my goal here? What was the reason why I did this? And that actually helps them to go back to the very beginning and see why they started taking guitar lessons in Tulsa to begin with.

This doesn’t have to be with Curtis Music Academy, but for most students we are the beginning of the music journey. So if we ask them to go back in time and think about the time that they began taking guitar lessons in Tulsa, there was obviously something that motivated them to do so because it is a really big commitment. It’s a time commitment. It’s a monetary commitment. All of that. So we want to make sure that our students remember. Go back. Think back to why they started taking guitar lessons in Tulsa with us to begin with. So that’s something really important that I believe that we asked them to do, because like I said, girls are incredibly, incredibly important to everything that you will do moving forward in your musical journey.

You want to make sure that all of our students are aware of that. So what we do. Curtis Music Academy has a little sticky notes and they say the door to door at the top of them. And what we ask most of our students to do is we’ll have them write down their biggest goal for learning an instrument, whether that be learning the piano or learning drums or learning vocal or the guitar, anything like that. We want to make sure that they’ve got a goal. So we ask them to write down their biggest goal, the number one thing that they want to learn on this little sticky note and to put it somewhere where it’s visible, you know, whether that would be on their physical piano, on their guitar book, on the music stand they have at home, anything like that.

We ask them to put it somewhere visible so that when they’re practicing and when they’re going forward with their music, we want to make sure that they can see it and that they are very aware of that goal and that it’s in the back of their mind while they’re practicing. Because as you might guess, it is actually a really big motivating factor to see your goal right in front of you and see that that’s something that you have wanted to accomplish. And the other thing that we have that has to do with goals and the diligent doer is.
