Guitar Lessons Tulsa | Major vs. Minor Scales

I had a question today from one of the parents of one of our students and he was asking a very intriguing question that I would like to tackle today, which is the interest and the relationship between major chords, specifically major scales and minor scales, and how do they really relate and how are they used in a way that is similar and songs. So to tackle this question, we are going to talk specifically about major scales for just a few moments. So with major scales, we can associate these scales with a happy sound. And when we hear the major scale, it is the most common scale of all of the other scales in western culture. So this is the doe ray me fast or la Ti Doh scale, if you’re familiar with that. We are talking about all of the white keys on a piano. And more specifically, these are the keys that start on c and and on c. So it’s going to go through all of the white notes starting on c and then on c again. And this is our major scale that is most commonly used throughout music in western culture.

Now if you are someone that is unfamiliar with music and how music is used, then you would probably benefit from some guitar lessons Tulsa and we could help you reach your goals to make those goals a reality. But when we’re talking about major scales, the difference between major scales in minor scales is actually very interesting because the major scale and the minor scale use Dun Dun, Dun, the exact same notes. The differences, we do not play the minor scale starting on c an on, see if we use the white notes because I just told you that’s the major scale that you play in guitar lessons Tulsa. What we would do is play all of the white note, but we would start on a and then and on a as opposed to starting on c and by doing this it creates a variation in the way that the half steps and the whole steps are configured in this scale. So when you have these half steps and whole steps in any certain order, it’s going to create either a major scale or a minor scale. And the way that they line up is coincidentally exactly perfect. To only play the white notes on the c major scale versus a minor scale which uses the exact same notes.

So you may be asking what causes the difference? Well, with the white notes there are five different places that we can find whole steps that go from one white note to the next without needing to play black note. We can find five different places that we can play a whole nut, a whole step, sorry. And the whole step is from c to d from d to e, from e to F. Whoa. Nope. That is a half step. So from F to g is a whole step from g to a is our fourth step. And then from a Tbi is your last place to find a whole step. Because just like e to f when we go from B two C it is a half step. So if you’re looking at these notes in the difference between half steps and whole steps, then what you will notice is you will find that the minor scale has a whole step, another host app and then a half step. You can learn all of this through taking guitar lessons Tulsa.

And if you are going through this you will probably be wondering because that’s actually the major scale and so the thing about major and minor scales is to talk about them without showing you makes no sense. So if you are still reading this article then I would encourage you to sign up and take your first guitar lessons Tulsa because it is only $1 and we can tackle all of the content that this article is covering and not only will it make more sense because we will be able to describe it to you in a way that makes sense. But you will also be able to see visually where these notes are on the piano to help you reach your goals of learning. The difference between major and minor scales and if we have a minor scale from it, ADB is a whole step B to c is a half step.

CDD is a whole step. D Two e is a whole step e to f is a half step f to g as a whole step. And then the very last interval is a g back to a which is also a whole step. So because these are different than from sea to see the places that these half steps in host steps happen are between the second and third note and then between the fifth and sixth to note and that is where these half steps are going to lie for the minor scales. Now if you play a minor scale, it actually sounds pretty sad. It makes you feel like it’s raining outside or it might feel like you are tip toeing through a house with no lights on. You might think of that as you’re planning these minor scales and the reason for that is because it’s simply sounds a little bit mysterious and a lot of times in pop music if you’re thinking of songs that are on the radio, the majority of songs, I would say the vast majority, perhaps even 90% are using a major scale to play that song.

They’re using the notes that are in the major scale and if you are playing a minor song, it’s very infrequent that we would hear this on the radio, but it does happen. There are many songs that are sad that are talking about their boyfriend breaking up with them and then they start dating their best friend. That’s probably going to be a song in a minor key because it’s a sad story. So because of that, that’s where you might find notes that are using the minor scale. Now, to make things even more strange, if you are playing in a minor key notes that are in that scale are actually going to be changing depending on the cord. So in the a minor scale,

the seventh note in that scale is g g natural, which is a white note. But a lot of times we would use corns that allow us to play g sharp rather than gee natural. And because of this, it allows us to play a major chord like the e major chord in the key of a minor. And that’s really the, the telling sign of whether or not we are in the key of c major or a minor. If it has an e major chord in the key of a minor, then we know it’s going to be a miner. This is all stuff that you will learn when taking guitar lessons Tulsa.
